As the aim is to make this relatively cheap, the base will be made of 2 chip boards, glued together to give the desired thickness.
And in order to add value to the lantern by the wood, I’ve chosen a lighter wood for the veneer, ash, with the example on the left moistened to represent the final colour.
This is very much an exercise for me, so I went for a simple form based on an already existing pattern
For the remainder of the lantern I used glass which I already had in my collection, a deep purple coloured glass.
It is clear to me that the wooden casing is going to be the make or break for this project. Which I will finish at Le Gallaudec Marquetrie.
A new question for me, can I reduce the amount of glass work time and produce something without a mold?
I had seen a lantern whilst in Ireland and thought now there’s an idea.
This could also be an opportunity to combine glass and wood skills.
I need to think about this.
