The Lantern (2)

This is very much an exercise for me, so I went for a simple form based on an already existing pattern

Front Pane

For the remainder of the lantern I used glass which I already had in my collection, a deep purple coloured glass.

The lantern taped together

It is clear to me that the wooden casing is going to be the make or break for this project. Which I will finish at Le Gallaudec Marquetrie.

The Lantern

A new question for me, can I reduce the amount of glass work time and produce something without a mold?

I had seen a lantern whilst in Ireland and thought now there’s an idea.

This could also be an opportunity to combine glass and wood skills.

I need to think about this.

Fiona’s Tulip Lamp (First Impressions )

But what will my choice of glass and the choices within that glass give, how will the different colours marry? I used available glass in my stock for flower stems and borders.

I fitted up the first cut and found section on a light table, remembering that this only approaches the impression given on a finished lamp.

Can’t wait to see the finished lamp, I’m pretty sure the flowers work.

Fiona’s Tulip Lamp (choosing the glassware)

To avoid an appearance of flatness I wanted to choose for both the flowers and the background enough nuance to represent adequately first the tulips, for which I went for a Bullseye 3334-30F Cranberry Pink sheet (770€/m2).

For the background I went for 2 colours, both from GK Techniques, the VECH 069 and VECH 826 shown here.

And here is the VECH 069 at a more reasonable 70€/ sheet

The Peacock Lamp First view of the lamp after demolding

So how does the actual lamp compare with the sectors placed on the light box? Rushing to try to finish for Xmas, and not quite making it, I de-molded easily after 30 mins at 95C and mounted it carefully on an existing lamp stand.

The light table doesn’t show the colours as bright as they are. So just remains to mount a spider, solder the inside of the lamp, solder a braided ring at the top of the lamp, finish solder the outside surface, treat the outside with a patina and generally clean and tidy the lamp.

Celia’s Lamp – Ready to go

Rings and filigrees delivered by Verrosaique ready to assemble and solder, glass from GK Techniques cut to size, ground and the edges copper taped.

So I need to finish cutting Alix’s wings and set up my workshop to accurately place the mold in a different horizontal position for each piece of glass and I’ll be ready to wax the mold.

The dragonfly lamps part 2

Celia’s idea of a lamp was more like this, nuances but also colour variants and a degraded colour scheme from top to bottom.

This should be easier right? Well I’m waiting for the filigrees to see if the wing colours are not too bright. Yes, more worries, well I guess I would just change the wing colours if they don’t work.

The Dragonfly lamps part1

A quick reminder of Alix’s lamp suggestion, mostly monochrome and all is nuanced.

Nuance is so difficult to do, especially without a light table, I had faith, well some so tried it over a lamp, not very accurate but…,

Clearly there will be some nuance, so my worry drops a little, the remaining question is of course will my choice of nuance work, well I hope to know for Christmas!

Projects for 2024 in Tiffany style

At Christmas first of all I gifted my parents the Daffodil lamp from 2022.

Then was asked by daughter number 2 if I could make her a lamp, number1 then threw in a request, I guess fame starts somewhere.

Told them to check out the Sotheby’s web site for ideas (they have sold a lot of originals. Well blow me down with a feather if they didn’t choose the same model, almost (different colour schemes), therefore only one mould to buy

Dragonfly in blue purple for number 2, all is in the colour nuance here, I’ll do this one second.

Dragonfly in more easily distinguished colour variations. So I’ll take on this one first.

But which size lamp to go for? Well I got Celia (number 1), to check out last years 22 inch lamp and we wisely went for a smaller lamp. Better for a smaller room.

For the mould, as for last year I ordered from Verrosaique, and I’m expecting a delivery towards the beginning of June. I’ll need to get in touch with them again to order the jewels and the rings.

.

This was the lamp size chose, 14 inches, so I will look at how I can work the colours from the larger lamps into this smaller version. Will need to check with Alix (number 2) if this size is ok for her.
